On major public transport projects the focus must be on maintaining an efficient service to keep loss of revenue and commuter inconvenience to a minimum. Recently,there have been a number of key projects where a combination of complicated engineering tasks and minimal opportunity to shut down service has represented a very real challenge for the teams involved. Forward-thinking strategy and careful planning ensured these projects were kept on track.
Completed in 2002, the Leeds City Station regeneration programme was the biggest rail-engineering scheme the area had seen for over 30 years.The programme included a 3-year project to replace the old roof, which prevented light from entering the platforms below, with a new, more aesthetically pleasing tubular steel and aluminium structure, which houses a special form of glazing, renowned for its ability to transmit light. The brief for the design was to create a light, airy and welcoming environment for passengers, in keeping with Railtrack's (Newwork Rail's predecessor) desire to make the station the modern 'hub' of Leeds city centre......
