At the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, new leadership, culture change, and powerful project management technology are driving dramatic budget savings and businessbuilding efficiencies. As a result, Guardian’s IT division has been able to create a strong partnership with Guardian Profit Centers that is benefiting the entire company– with Executive Vice President and CIO Dennis S. Callahan at the helm. Guardian’s $150 million IT budget was growing 30 percent annually, with too much of the cost going to maintenance and legacy enhancement. The return on this investment was one big question mark, and Guardian executives recognized that change – from the top down – was the only answer. Callahan, who readily admits to seeing only “opportunity” in what others call “challenge,” could not resist the chance to remake the success of the country’s fourth-largest mutual life insurance company. “Guardian recognized the need to have technology be more of a strategic contributor than it was,” he says. “And they recognized the need to slow the spending growth.
